Adopting Man's Best Friend
Dog adoption: Everyone needs a pet. It's that little family member that is nearby to always give you love an affection when you feel lonely, or someone to play with the kids while you are taking care of the barbeque in the backyard. A dog is truly a great animal and can become and important family member. There are many things that you should consider when deciding to bring a dog into the family. Adoption is one of the best options that you have out there. Here are five things to keep in mind when you are looking to adopt a dog for the family.
Do you have children? If you have children, then you are going to want to take them with you when selecting a dog from the kennel. You will want to see how the dog is going to react to your kids as well as ask questions of the personnel at the kennel to point out dogs that have come from families with children. You want to know if the dog has a history of biting or fighting. A dog with this history is not going to be good around young children because they will most likely play a little rough with it and this can cause the dog to react in a negative way.
Do you have other pets? Some dogs are just not good with other animals. If you are getting a dog that is already grown, then you want to know if he/she is ok with other animals. You also want to know what animals they are and are not ok with. Contrary to popular belief, a dog and cat can live happily side by side as long as the animal that is coming into the family has already been exposed to that particular type of animal and is ok with them.
Do you want to house train? House training is one of the most difficult things to face when getting a new dog. Sometimes you can visit the humane society and get dogs that are already house trained and cut down on this issue. However, if you have children, many times they are going to want a puppy and puppies have to be house trained. Make sure the entire family is prepared for what this takes and that everyone sticks to it.
Do you have the time for a dog? Dogs not only need food, water, and to be taken outside. They also need baths, walks, exercise, and most of all love and attention. If your family is constantly not home, even on the weekends then you may want to consider either getting a small dog that can ride in the car with you on family trips, or not getting a dog at all. Dogs do get lonely. However, if you go on vacations then there are kennels available to watch your dog while you are away. These kennels feed, water, bathe, and take your dog out, as well as give him/her the love and affection you can't while you are away.
Can you afford it? At first glance owning a dog does not look that expensive. You figure that they use the bathroom outside, so all you need to worry about is food. This is highly incorrect. Dogs not only need their basic necessities, but also need to go to the veterinarian for regular check ups just like you need to go to your doctor. They need to be treated for fleas. Dogs also need shots just like you do to vaccinate them from harmful diseases that in some cases can affect you and your family. Pet insurance is a good thing to have for your animal especially if the unexpected car accident or illness happens.
Having a dog, is just like having another member of the family. The dog will love you and protect you, so you need to make sure that you are ready to to the same for him. There is a reason they call the dog “Mans Best Friend”. Man just needs to remember to be a best friend back..
